In humid weather, pest infestations are inevitable in concealed areas that are difficult to detect and treat immediately. Here is a guide on how to prevent and control pest problems.

Common termite species in Hong Kong include the Formosan Subterranean Termite (also known as the Taiwan Termite), Black-winged Subterranean Termite, Yellow-winged Termite, and Drywood Termite. Among them, the Formosan Subterranean Termite is most commonly found in homes, from rural areas and low-rise buildings to high-rise apartments.

The Formosan Subterranean Termite invades buildings primarily through two methods:
• Land route - Building mud tubes through cracks, water pipes, drainage pipes, etc.
• Air route - Mature winged termites (reproductives) fly out from their nests to dark and damp corners.

1. Chemical Treatment
Targeted treatment using termiticide by spraying or drilling and injecting chemicals in infested areas such as wall bases and wooden floors. Follow-up inspections and regular preventive treatments are required thereafter.

2. Bait System
Using insect growth regulators combined with food (such as cellulose) to create bait, placed at infestation or active sites. Worker termites consume the bait and return to the nest, transferring it to other termites, ultimately eliminating the entire colony. This method requires pest control personnel to regularly inspect, replenish, or replace the bait.

Physical Methods:

- Vacuum Cleaner: Add insecticide to the vacuum cleaner and use it to vacuum walls, wardrobes, bedding, etc., to capture bed bugs, causing them to be poisoned and killed.

- Steam Treatment: Use high-temperature steam at approximately 80°C to eliminate bed bugs on surfaces and hidden in crevices (mattresses, sofa cushions, etc.), then apply residual insecticides.

- Washing Textiles: If clothing, bed linens, etc., have had bed bugs, they should first be sealed and then soaked or thoroughly washed in hot water at no less than 80°C. Only return them to their original place after ensuring there are no bed bugs.

Chemical Control:

Spray or inject residual insecticides in hidden areas and crevices such as walls, wardrobes, and floors. Natural diatomaceous earth powder can also be used to abrade the bed bug exoskeleton, causing dehydration and death.

Environmental Control:

Regularly inspect and clean furniture and clothing, maintain a dry home environment, and promptly replace and seal any crevices or holes where bed bugs and mosquitoes can breed.

• Choose a pest control company with good reputation and credibility. Consumers can request technical training documentation (certificates, etc.) for reference.
• Compare prices from multiple providers. Different pest control companies have varying fees and methods. After comparing at least three companies, you can clearly understand whether their pest control techniques, implementation procedures, and follow-up services meet your needs.
• Request a clear written quotation, including service fees, scope of work, number of treatments, and follow-up services.
• The pest control company should provide appropriate information based on inspection results, including control plans/programs, pesticide information (names, quantities, Hong Kong registration numbers, etc.), and safety measures. Consumers can request pesticide documentation from the pest control company.
• When applying pesticides, choose those that are registered in Hong Kong with clear bilingual labels as required by law, and opt for lower toxicity pesticides.

Besides bed bugs, pet flea control is also important. Most products recommend applying the product to the pet's back or neck area to prevent the pet from reaching it. Additionally, pay attention to the safety and suitability of spot-on treatments.
• When applying spot-on treatments, drop directly onto the skin rather than on the pet's fur to reduce residue.
• Apply to the skin on the back of the neck. To avoid allergic reactions, test the treatment on a small area and observe for two days.
• Before use, carefully read the product label, noting the usage instructions, target animals, and precautions.
• Avoid use on pets that are weak, elderly, ill, or have previously shown sensitivity to pesticides.
