Wooden flooring is eco-friendly, natural, stylish and comfortable, making it increasingly popular. However, wooden floors have a critical weakness - they are prone to moisture damage and require careful maintenance. If mold or blackening occurs, immediate remediation is necessary. The main causes of floor mold and blackening include:
1. Water Penetration During Mopping
Sometimes, using an overly wet mop allows water to seep through floor gaps into the interior. Over time, this leads to excessive moisture content in the flooring, promoting mold growth and fungal development.
2. Inadequate Cleaning of Floor Spills
In daily life, spilled water and wet umbrellas often drip on floors. Many people ignore this, allowing floors to air-dry naturally, which lets moisture seep into the interior. In severe cases such as pipe leaks or rain entering through open windows, simply wiping the surface is insufficient. For minor water exposure, use a vacuum cleaner to extract moisture from the surface and gaps after wiping dry. For severe water damage, the flooring must be removed and thoroughly dried.
3. Improper Installation
Installing flooring before the substrate is completely dry traps moisture inside. This trapped moisture cannot escape, leading to excessive humidity that causes mold and blackening.
Floor mold is categorized into surface mold and internal mold, each requiring different treatment approaches:
1. Surface Mold
- Apply homemade cleaning solution (1 part mild bleach : 3 parts water) to affected areas
- Sand the moldy area with sandpaper and refinish with spray coating.
2. Internal Mold
For localized mold, remove and replace the affected sections. If mold is widespread, complete removal and reinstallation of all flooring is necessary.
